Robert Thompson died from wounds on 11th November, 1914, after having been sent to a base hospital on the coast, but as yet there is no information as to when and where he was wounded. The 4th Middlesex battalion was part of 8 Brigade, 3rd Division, that had arrived in France at the beginning of the war in August, 1914 and which had been in action during most of thew fighting since then, most recently during the Battle of La Bassée.
